Friday, 17 May 2013 13:09

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, Friday  convicted and setenced to seven years imprisonment, two  employees of Barewa Pharmaceutical Company Ltd,  Adeyemo Abiodun and Ebele Eromosele.

The company and its employees were charged  on an amended six-count charged of the production of a killer syrup, “my pikin.”

There was mild drama, midway into the judgment, as one of the convicts suddenly began to collapse.

Trial judge, Justice Okechukwu Okeke in his judgment, convicted the accused on two counts, while he acquitted them of four counts.

The Judge accordingly sentenced the accused to seven years imprisonment each on the offence, while he ordered the company to be compulsorily wound up and its assets forfeited to the Federal Government.

“The prosecution tendered several exhibits in the trial of the accused, but failed to lead evidence that the accused actually produced the adulterated drugs.

“I hereby find the accused not guilty of counts one, two, five and six, dealing with production and adulteration of drugs, while I find them guilty of counts three and four which is conspiracy and sale of the drugs.

“The accused are hereby convicted as charged” the court held.
Shortly after allocutus by defence counsel, the first accused Adeyemo Abiodun, suddenly started shaking and gradually began to collapse.

The judge then summoned the medical doctor in charge of the Federal High Court, who after examining the accused, confirmed he was hypertensive, and his blood pressure, very high.

What To Do When A Dog Attacks While Running

Wednesday, 15 May 2013 13:58

Whether you run in the park or around town, chances are you've come across a dog or two during your miles. And while some are friendly, leashed, and only want to play with you, others can cause panic as you wonder if you're going to be attacked.

For one 63-year-old female, that nightmare came true last week. The unidentified woman was found dead, mauled during her morning run in Littlerock, CA. Police quickly seized eight dogs that were identified by an eyewitness as the attackers, though DNA tests need to be run to verify if the dogs were the killers.

Unfortunately stories of runners being confronted by dogs are becoming more common as irresponsible owners dump their unwanted pets or improperly restrain them. But you don't need to stop your workout to stay safe. Roo Yori, a dog trainer who specializes in pit bull rehabilitation and the proud owner of the famous and beloved therapy pit bulls Wallace and Hector, offers advice on how to deal with an unknown or aggressive dog.

1. Don't run. Tough advice for a runner, but Roo explains that while your natural instinct may be to flee, you need to fight that. "Unless you know for sure you can get behind a barrier of some sort that will separate you from the dog, running away or screaming is most likely going to make the situation worse. Chances are, you're not going to out-run a dog, and the act of running will probably activate the chase instinct present in all dogs."

2. Freeze. Most of the time, the best thing is become motionless, Roo says. So think of making your body like a post and fold your arms across your chest. "If you're boring and don't engage the dog, it will most likely sniff your leg and move on," Roo says. "Wait until the dog is a good distance from you, and move quietly to a safe area."

3. Be a rock. If the dog still attacks you and manages to knock you over, Roo says to curl up and cover your head, like the tornado drills you did in school, pulling your face down into your chest and covering your neck with your hands. He reiterates that if you're boring, the dog is much more likely to simply leave you alone.

4. Take precautions. If you're particularly concerned, you can carry a canister of pepper spray or mace with you, and Roo adds that there are citronella versions that also work well. But the best prevention is to know your route. Avoid any areas where owners allow their dogs to roam, and if you're trying a new path, drive it a few times first to see if you notice anything unsafe, canine-related or otherwise. Then simply stay aware while running. "If you notice an unknown dog ahead of you that you're not comfortable with, the sooner you stop and keep your distance-without running away-the better chance you'll have at avoiding an encounter," Roo says.

A New Virulent Strain Of Gonorrhoea That Is Worse Than AIDS Emerges - Expert

Thursday, 09 May 2013 16:16

It was reported that cases detected in Japan indicated a new strain of gonorrhoea, with the American National Coalition of STD Directors claiming it was “an emergency situation”.

However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention denied reports that any new strain of gonorrhoea was detected.

The bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae has become increasingly resistant to antibiotics. Professor Cathy Ison, head of the National Reference Laboratory for Gonorrhoea in Britain, told the BBC last month that “there is a possibility that if we don’t do something then it could become untreatable by 2015”.

Dr Derek Freedman — who founded of the Society for the Study of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Ireland and is a founding member of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology — said the “overuse” and “inappropriate use” of antibiotics was behind the current health scare: “Gonorrhoea has become resistant to a lot of the antibiotics previously used.

“There is now only one antibiotic that is fully effective against gonorrhoea. It is given by injection.

“There is definitely [a] need to be worried about the development of antibiotic resistance: if antibiotic overuse and misuse continues, we will be left with nothing to treat these simple infections.

“We are seeing an emerging epidemic of gonorrhoea in this country, especially with men having sex with men, but there are a lot of heterosexual cases as well. Girls carry it silently.”

Dr Freedman said gonorrhoea in the throat or back passage typically remained “completely silent” and may not be detected through a urine screening test. He said blood tests should be part of all STD screening.

“There is always a need for awareness of STIs. The main risk factor is casual encounters, particularly men who have sex with men. Alcohol is usually a co-factor: it inhibits the inhibitions.”

He said overindulgence in alcohol had played a “significant role” in between 60% and 70% of cases seen in both private and public practice.

Dr Freedman said his practice in Dublin could see up to three cases of gonorrhoea a week. He is also attached to a clinic in St James’s Hospital, where five to 10 people a week present with gonorrhoea: “The most important thing is when people take a sexual risk they go and get fully and comprehensively sexually screened.”

In a report published on May 1, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre here said there had been 409 detections of gonorrhoea in the first 16 weeks of this year, and 48 in the last week for which figures were compiled.

Stop Wearing Bras, Scientists Warn Women

Friday, 19 April 2013 08:13

Bras do nothing to help support a woman's bosoms and could even be causing damage, research has found.

The Telegraph of London reported on Friday that for years, women have been taught of the virtues of a good bra in order to make the most of their assets and defy the pull of gravity.

Now a French study has claimed that bosoms gain no benefit from underwear support and that women would do better to go without them.

Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon of Besançon University spent 15 years studying the anatomy of 330 women, before coming to the conclusion that bras are a "false necessity."

Professor Rouillon said: "Medically, physiologically and anatomically, bosoms gain no benefit from being denied gravity."

The study found that bosoms were firmer and sagged less in the women who did not wear a bra, and such women were no more likely than others to suffer from back pain.

The sports scientist, who has been researching the subject since 1997, using a slide rule and a caliper, found a 7mm difference in the height of bosoms; with those who went without a bra faring best against gravity.

Professor Rouillon suggested that bosoms become "dependent" on lingerie support once women start wearing it, meaning that supporting muscle is under-used and degrades more quickly.

He said his initial results "validated the hypothesis that the bra is a false 'necessity'" but that he would not advise women who have relied on bras for years to cast them aside."

Some of the women who took part in the experiment, carried out at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire (University Hospital) in Besançon, said stopping wearing a bra had even helped ease back pains.

British research on post-menopausal women has previously suggested that those who wear a bra are more likely to suffer bosom pain.

Heart Disease Culprit Found In Red Meat: US Study

Monday, 08 April 2013 05:39

WASHINGTON: The cholesterol and saturated fat in red meat may not the real culprit for heart disease as another compound -- carnitine -- could harden the arteries, according to US researchers.

Quoting the researchers, China's Xinhua news agency said that gutbacteria metabolises carnitine into trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a metabolitethey previously linked to the promotion of atherosclerosis in humans.

Further, the researchers said that a diet high in carnitine promotes thegrowth of the bacteria that metabolise carnitine, compounding the problem byproducing even more of the artery-clogging TMAO.

"Carnitine metabolism suggests a new way to help explain why a diet richin red meat promotes atherosclerosis," said study author Stanley Hazen, sectionhead of Preventive Cardiology & Rehabilitation in the Miller Family Heart and Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic.

Prior research has shown that a diet with frequent red meat consumptionis associated with increased cardiovascular disease risk, but that the cholesterol and saturated fat in red meat does not appear to be enough to explain the increased cardiovascular risks.

The researchers followed 2,595 patients undergoing elective cardiace valuations and also examined the cardiac effects of a carnitine-enhanced dietin normal mice compared with mice with suppressed levels of gut microbes.

Finally, they found a new connection between red meat and cardiovascular disease.

While carnitine is naturally occurring in red meats, including beef, venison, lamb, mutton, duck, and pork, it's also a dietary supplement availablein pill form and a common ingredient in energy drinks.

With this new research in mind, Hazen cautions that more research needs to be done to examine the safety of chronic carnitine supplementation.

"Carnitine is not an essential nutrient; our body naturally produces allwe need," Hazen said.

"We need to examine the safety of chronically consuming carnitine supplements.-- BERNAMA
